I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound

“I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things, I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” These are the words of Paul the Apostle and he said this as regards “financial prosperity”. The context in which it was used was in regards to the giving of material substance to him by the Churches.

The lesson Paul was saying is this, material prosperity was never a social status symbol for him. He could operate fully in abundance or even where there are necessities. It wasn’t about prospering to belong to a certain social class where he could no longer be found doing certain things because they were now beneath him. Paul was simply saying if I have to “fly in a jet” to preach in a place I can but in other situations, I may be in a position where I may have to be carried on a motorcycle to go preach, with that, he said he was fine. He could operate in any space comfortably once the need was getting the gospel out.
